Summary: the save the planet club
was cleaning up Gilroy park, Gilroy park was picked as the site to celebrate
Earth Day that year. As Ryan, Luke, and Carly clean up the park they come up
with an idea, if they manage to collect and recycle 5,000 aluminum cans, they
can make enough money to buy some beautiful flowers to plant in Gilroy Park.
Ryan, Luke and Carly start to collect all the cans they can and as they collect
they sort the cans by placing 10 cans in each bag and then putting 10 bags of
10 inside a bigger bag to make a bag of 100 cans. As the book progresses they
find more and more cans eventually putting 10 bags of 100 into a bigger bag of
1,000. At the end of the story the students were able to collect the 5,000 cans
and buy the flowers for Gilroy park.
As the students add more cans to their collections they give a
lesson in place value and addition.

***** This book is very engaging, the illustrations attracts
students attention, while the story keeps them at the tip of their toes wanting
to know if the students will be able to collect enough cans in time. it also
introduces place values and how to add 2 digit and 3 digit numbers.
Classroom
ideas: This book can be used to teach students mathematical concepts
such as, adding two-digit and three-digit numbers based on place values. This
story demonstrates how many ones make up a ten and how one can group ten tens
into a 100. The book can be used to teach students how to regroup ones and tens
in order to add two-digit and three-digit numbers. students could use beans to
represent a given number making groups of 1’s 10’s and 100’s depending on their
levels. Then students will be given another number to represent with beans.
After representing the two numbers with beans grouping by 1’s 10’s or 100’s
they can add the two numbers. students will see how to add ones plus ones, tens
plus tens and hundreds plus hundreds. Students will also see how If they have
more than 10 ones they can group them and add a 10 and if they have more than
10 tens they can group them into a hundred.
This book seems like an appropriate context for teaching young students the mathematical concept of using different strategies to add and subtract aligned with the CCS. I also liked the fact that the context of the story line is real world oriented and highlights earth day, which serves as a double lesson for students in taking care of the earth and improving ones community.

DeleteJissell- I like the book that you chose for your blog! I think it not only teaches a math lesson, but shows how the main idea is for the children to work towards reaching their goal. I like that idea to influence the students working hard to achieve their goal. It demonstrates math in a few lessons. Teaching students about money, adding two to three digit numbers, even a lesson about grouping! It seems like a great book to read to my class one day.
ReplyDeleteLove this book! It's perfect for teaching groups of ten, which as we discussed in class, is a key factor to teaching number sense and understanding our place value system. Definitely a book I 'd like to use with my students. Perfect for around Earth Day or any conservation unit.
ReplyDeleteAs elementary school teachers we will have to find different ways to engage our students. This book seems like it can do the job. Students will be engaged, as well as learning the concept of place value and adding them.
ReplyDeleteI think this book is brilliant because it takes a real life application like earth day and aligns it common core standards in counting by 10's.
